Today’s “Your Body is a Temple” Topic: Healthy Food Choices

When I started this series, I thought it would be overstating the obvious to write about “eating healthy” and “moving more”.  I have received questions about both, so I decided to dedicate a few “Your Body is a Temple” posts to food and exercise.

Last fall, I read  by Kimberley Taylor from TakeBackYourTemple.com.  The devotional of Day 2 still resonates with me.

“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.”

Proverbs 14:1 (NIV)

She compares Proverbs 14:1 to the story of the three little pigs. Remember the story when the first pig builds his house with straw, the second pig builds his house with sticks, and the third pig builds his house with bricks.  The Big Bad Wolf huffed and puffed and blew down the houses made of straw and sticks, the weaker materials.  The Big Bad Wolf huffed and puffed and huffed and puffed and huffed and puffed but could not blow down the house built with bricks, the strongest of the materials.

My question to you is:  What materials are you using to build your body, where the Holy Spirit lives?

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.  Are we building that temple to be in the best condition to withstand? Are your food choices straw, sticks or bricks?

Making healthy food choices is part of taking care of our bodies.

“The wise woman builds her house” Proverbs 14:1a

Constant unhealthy food choices will not help your body to be at its best to serve the Lord.

“but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.” Proverbs 14:1b

Why healthy food choices?

  • To help us think clearly to understand the directives He gives us to serve Him.
  • To help us have good energy to follow-through on the directives to serve Him
  • To help us be strong enough to stay the course while serving Him.

Food is the fuel for our body.  Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.  We can’t feed our bodies with straw and sticks, metaphorically speaking, and expect it to withstand like it made with bricks.

I am not suggesting removing all unhealthy food choices instantly.  I am suggesting adding more healthy choices.  This is a positive journey and we are focusing on adding to our lives.  In a post I did last year, 5 Lifestyle Changes That Helped 20 Pounds Disappear, you will find an example of focusing on adding healthy food choices without focusing on depriving yourself.

Self-Reflection of the day:

When you make your food choices, are you considering that you are fueling body, the body you are using to serve Him? Unhealthy food choices are sometimes cheaper, faster and more appealing to the taste.  Is that helping you work toward your goal of tuning up your body to serve Him better?

Action Task of the day:

Honestly assess your food choices.  Find at least one area where you can add more healthy food choices is to your diet, and do it. Please share the area you choose in the comment area and how you plan on making it happen.

Today’s Prayer:

Dear Lord,

Thank you for all you do.  Please continue to guide me on this journey to prepare my body to serve You better.  Please guide me to make healthier food choices to fuel my body.   Please also help reduce my cravings for things that are not the best fuel for my body.  Thank you in advance.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen.

Thank you for coming on this journey with me!

Your Body is a Temple” is a series of actionable tasks. It’s a spiritual, emotional and physical journey to tune-up our bodies to better serve the Lord. Check out the whole series here.
